In some mild cases, gout can be self-managed with lifestyle changes, such as weight loss if needed and avoiding foods high in purines.

However, many people with gout should also be on a preventive medication to lower uric acid levels and stop flares from occurring. The American College of Rheumatology recommends uric acid-lowering medication for people who have two or more gout flares a year, have gout tophi, or have evidence on X-rays of joint damage due to gout. We encourage you to speak to your doctor about the right treatment plan for you — including a combination of lifestyle changes and medication.
